Youths shed tears, locks of hair for cause

HAMILTON — Badin High School senior Brandi Rutherford was a little nervous about getting her long locks cut.

She and 17 of her classmates on Wednesday, Feb. 11, had volunteered to have their hair cut and donated to Locks of Love — a Florida-based nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to children ages 6 to 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

"My legs wouldn't stop shaking before, during and after," Rutherford said.

After cutting off 10 inches, "it feels like I have no hair," she said, "but I feel really good about my donation."

Juniors Jake Fetters and Adrian Sirn co-chaired the event on behalf of the Teen Advocacy Group at the school.

A number of area hair stylists also volunteered for the event.

Students also collected funds and some male students had their heads shaved.

"I am so excited," Fetters said after his cut. "It's crazy, but it makes you feel really good. I am so proud of all my classmates because we all came together for a good cause and donated a good amount of money."

Students accepted a last-minute challenge during the Locks of Love assembly — collect enough donations and Badin Principal Frank Margello would get his hair cut.

In the blink of an eye, students collected $130 and Margello took a seat in the barber's chair for a trim.

"I think it's wonderful ... we have great kids," Margello said. "Serving God, serving others is our motto at Badin High School and we try to live it every day."
