Twelve to be honored into Butler Co. Sports Hall of Fame

Jim Kernohan and Jerry Oberdorf, whose athletic accomplishments continued long after they graduated from high school, will be two of the new inductees into the 27th class of the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame.
They will join other new inductees La rry Allen, Greg Gephart, Darin Hill, Fred McCollum, Mary McConnell, Marty Reist, Ken Rose, Leonard Rush, Jan Taylor and Larry Wood.
The Hall of Fame ceremonies will be Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Manchester Inn in Middle-town. The social hour will begin at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and the program at 7.
Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in Hamilton at Clark's Sporting Goods and Tom's Cigar Store and in Middletown at Bar-B-Q Junction.
Kernohan (Garfield High School class of 1970) was a two-year starter for the Griffin basketball team that won two Greater Miami Conference and district championships and he led the team in scoring as a senior.
In his first year as boys basketball coach at Ross, he was named the Fort Ancient Valley Conference and Southwest District Coach of the Year. His teams won two FAVC titles in his three years as coach, and he was an assistant coach for the Rams when they won the 1980 state championship.
Kernohan has been an assistant coach for Ross softball for 17 years, during which time the Rams have won 17 league titles, 10 district titles and four regional titles.
Oberdorf (Fairfield, class of 1962) was voted Most Valuable Player on the basketball team as a junior and senior, was the Most Valuable Lineman in football as a senior year, and that year won the All-Around Athlete Award.
Oberdorf continued his football career at Northwestern University and he holds the NCAA record for the longest tackle-eligible play of 40 yards against Notre Dame.
He also has been involved in Fairfield Little League, Fairfield Bantam Football and the Fairfield/Hamilton Youth Basketball League.
