UD players attend Browns' tryouts

Evident immediately on the first day of Cleveland Browns rookie minicamp is how crowded the field is — and how easy it might be to get lost in the shuffle.

In addition to their five draft choices and 15 undrafted college free agents, the Browns have a whopping 54 players in for tryouts in the hope that one or two are found to warrant attention beyond this weekend.

In this latter group are University of Dayton products Kevin Hoyng, a college quarterback trying to make it as a safety, and Matt Champa, an aspiring receiver.

What are the UD players' chances? General Manager Phil Savage put it this way: "They get a chance to put an orange helmet on and try out. They'll definitely be evaluated."

OK, so the odds are long, and nothing is promised. But weirder things have happened, right? Joshua Cribbs wasn't drafted, and he has his own TV show.

Champa, wearing a white No. 36 jersey, caught everything thrown his way during passing drills, then worked on his long-snapping after practice. He was the last player off the field. Hoyng, wearing a brown No. 29 jersey, seemed to react well in limited exposure.
