Rivals defeated unbeaten foes
Badin vs. Alter, 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7
Friday, November 07, 2008
HAMILTON — Thirty-four teams entered the first round of the Ohio high school football playoffs with unbeaten records, and only 27 survived.
Badin knocked off one of the unbeatens in Clinton-Massie with a 33-27 overtime victory.
And the Rams' next opponent, Kettering Alter, also spoiled a perfect season with a 35-7 thumping of Brookville.
The other unbeatens who fell were: Division I — Woodward (52-0 against Wayne); Division II — East Cleveland Shaw (35-0 against Madison), Western Brown (44-21 to New Carlisle Tecumseh) and Toledo Central Catholic (34-7 against Olentangy Liberty); and Division IV — Lorain Clearview (56-12 to Ottawa Glandorf).
• Playoff history: This is the 17th season in which Badin has qualified for the playoffs. The Rams own a career record of 18-15.
Alter is making its 14th postseason appearance and is 18-13.
The last time the two teams met in the playoffs was Nov. 1, 2002, when Alter beat Badin 38-14.
• Great eight: This is the first time Badin has won eight games in a season since 1998, when the Rams went 10-3.
• Remember when: It's been nine years since Badin beat Alter. The last victory was a 14-7 triumph on Sept. 24, 1999, at Kettering Fairmont's Foreman Field.
Justin Peters scored on touchdown runs of 12 and 3 yards and finished with 38 rushing yards.
Joe Webb, Nate Bunce and Lee Miles all recovered fumbles, and Miles finished with 15 tackles.
• Remember when II: While 1999 was Badin's last varsity victory against Alter, the current crop of seniors experienced victory against the Knights three years ago in a freshman game.
"We know that was a totally different game," Badin quarterback Zach Toerner said. "But it's still a good memory."
