How one high school makes money with synthetic turf
Artificial grass costs about $700K to install, but rentals quickly make up the price.
More: Do you feel the benefits of turf outweigh the costs?
Thursday, July 31, 2008
Six years ago, Princeton High School's Viking Stadium was utilized only five times a year for home football games.
Then in 2003, the high school installed AstroPlay turf and Princeton officials say they could not have made a wiser investment.
Last year, Viking Stadium was used 300 of 365 days. Community groups, private soccer clubs, athletic organizations and physical education classes use the field — in addition to Princeton's athletic teams.
"I do believe it's a no-brainer for schools," Princeton athletic director Scott Kaufman said. "There's a sticker shock at first, but you have to look at its value for kids and the community. Schools are starting to get it because they understand the impact — the revenue impact, the safety impact and the usage impact."
The turf cost Princeton $680,000 and the district's goal was to have it paid off in seven years. But because the field generates about $40,000 a year in revenue from outside groups, the Hamilton County school is ahead of schedule and hopes to pay it off this upcoming school year.
Renting Princeton's field costs $60 an hour without lights and $75 an hour with lights. About 90 percent of the revenue comes from November to March.
The rental fee for tournament soccer games ranges from $200 to $400, while it's $1,500 to $2,000 for playoff football games. All of the gate receipts from tournament games goes to the Ohio High School Athletic Association; the Princeton boosters get the parking and concessions revenue.
Princeton's old grass field cost $60,000 a year to maintain, which included cutting, watering and painting. Now, all that's done to maintain the turf is grooming it three times a year, and Kaufman does that himself with a brush pulled by a tractor.
The life expectancy for Princeton's field is 12 to 15 years. But the revenue generated in years six through 12 will be put aside to pay for the replacement turf.
"It's a pretty good situation where we've done something great for our teams," Kaufman said. "It's great for our community, and ultimately through the life of the turf, it will save taxpayers money and generate revenue that wasn't possible before."

I would like to see turf on all high school fields , mainly Carlisle fields , the cost of up keep is very high on grass fields are high , and it gives to kids a little more pride in there school.

The Lakota School board and administration is not spending our levee monies responsibly, an opinion that has been quoted in this paper, this is a case where they don’t enter into it. Levee money does not go to purchase and the long-term cost/benefit analysis shows turf is a fiscal decision over grass. What irks me is that the Lakota School board could & would scuttle this if it harmed odds of passing the next levee, which is already in the works. Vote NO, but not because of this.

To answer the question is Waynes case the whole turf project is paid for by the premier network.. Wayne will get payments from the hospital over the next ten years i think. What wayne did was get a loan lean on the turf. Which the bank put a lean on the hospital grant to guarantee funds.. Prinecton case you cant complain to much cause there paying back there expense in 4 years. There saying 60,000 a year for upkeep… take that by 12 years 720’000 so it more than pays for it by itself.

Hey get real you should take your own advice. Countless studies have shown the benefits of involvement in extra and co- curricular activities to student’s overall success. Check out the NY school districts that have had to cut activities. The communities are stepping up because they realize that kids with nothing to do tend to get in trouble. The only point that you make is your idea that the parents should shoulder more of the costs. By the way Wal Mart is the #1 or 2 employer in OH, so…

SPORTS SHOULD BE ELIMINATED FROM PUBLIC EDUCATION. KID ARE THERE TO LEARN. THAT IS IT. IT SHOULD BE FUNDED ONLY BY THE KIDS PARENTS THAT ARE ON THE TEAM. SAD THING IS MOST OF THE FOOTBALL PLAYERS END UP WORKING AT WALMART. CAN’T READ OR WRITE. GIVE ME A BREAK.

I would have to say that turf is the best way to go in high school. With most schools useing the same feild for Varisty, JV and freshmen sports. If you factor in football, soccer, track and band you have 11 teams useing one field. The cost of maintaining a field that is used that much is huge. Plus how many times have when see a high school game played on a field that seems unsafe?
By VietVet
July 31, 2008 9:23 AM | Link to this
Questions need to be asked on this. The article states some of the cost for new fields are being paid by hospitals. How much of the cost is being paid by the school’s themselves and from what budget? With the schools crying about no money and levy after levy being forced on the property owner, you would think that the schools would spend the money on improving education, not athletic fields.Secondly,I thought,in the past, the medical people didn’t recommend turf fields due to injuries.Which is it?

turf fields are the fields of the future i think all high schools should consider turf fields.according to my knowledge the monroe hornets will be very competitive and earn a playoff berth.since i am a hornets fan i dont see the middies going anywhere this season which basically means monroe will allways be a much more respected team than middletown.besides middletown sucks.go hornets all the way!!!

Turf not only benefits the extracurricular sports and music programs, it ultimately saves the taxpayer money in the field maintenance costs that come up in most if not all permanent improvement budgets.

July 31, 2008 8:48 AM | Link to this
Yes field turf is initially costly. In the long run, the cost of installing artificial turf versus natural grass has financial benefits. Injuries are lessened, multiple event use is increased and maintenance is minimal. It is the multi use that is important here considering turf gives the fundraising organizations the opportunity to develop and entertain many fundraising events that provide funding for extracurricular sports and music programs in the schools and the community.
