Betts may get better look with Manning out
QB from Vandalia, Miami could get more practice time with first team while Colts' star recovers.

The sudden uncertainty about the Indianapolis Colts quarterback position for the next 4-to-6 weeks could be the biggest opportunity of Josh Betts' young professional career.
Betts, the Vandalia Butler High School and Miami University graduate, has been on the Colts' practice squad for two seasons, and Monday's announcement that Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning underwent left knee surgery that should sideline him for most or all of training camp could mean more repetitions — and possibilities — for Betts.
"Peyton usually takes 80 to 85 percent of the reps," Betts said Tuesday, July 15. "I don't know how they're planning to split up the reps, but any more time with the first team would be a great help."
Betts, signed as a free agent out of Miami in May 2006, has been a practice squad member because the Colts are one of the few NFL teams to keep only two quarterbacks on the active roster — Manning and former Wisconsin QB Jim Sorgi. With Manning absent, the Colts have three quarterbacks on the roster: Sorgi, Betts and Adam Tafralis, an undrafted free agent who signed with Indianapolis out of San Jose State.
"This could open their eyes that they might need a third guy on the active roster," said Miami coach Shane Montgomery. "(Betts) has enough physical ability to play in the NFL. You just try to get your chances."
