Hornets conduct boys hoops camp

By Dan Gedney

Staff Writer

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Current and future Hornets will hit the hardwood together next week at Monroe High School.

Boys basketball coach Denny Ferguson, his staff and current and former players will host athletes from kindergarten through seventh grade at Monroe High School's boys varsity basketball camp from Monday, June 30 through Thursday, July 3.

Each session will run from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Activities will include various drills to teach the young players basic fundamentals and games like no dribble, one dribble and five guys touch it.

"This is very important. We hold these camps to build interest in the game of basketball and hopefully the young kids will want to continue playing later on," Ferguson said. "We are going to try to make it a learning but fun experience."

Registrations for the youth camp will be taken at the door, according to Ferguson. The $50 fee for participation includes a camp T-shirt, basketball and trophies that will be handed out at the end of the week.

The Hornets have been keeping busy this month by participating in open gyms with local schools and competing in the Kingdom League at Lebanon. Ferguson also took his players to Wittenberg University to compete in a varsity team shootout on June 21.

"The kids are playing hard. We we're in a tough bracket (at Wittenberg), but we played those teams tight," Ferguson said. "We are just trying to get them to play, have the ball in their hands and get to know the other players on the team. It's more about that than winning and losing."
