A Madison coach under investigation for an inappropriate relationship with an 18-year-old female student was arrested Friday, May 16, for allegedly "engaging in sexual activity" with a 17-year-old girl.

Madison Junior/Senior High School softball coach and history teacher David "Jamie" Wagner, 32, was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of sexual battery, a third-degree felony, said Butler County Sheriff's Sgt. Melina Smith.

Wagner admitted to having a sexual relationship with the juvenile, which he said was consensual, Smith said. The charges stem from two separate sexual encounters in April and May of this year at Wagner's residence in Monroe, she said. The sexual battery charge is due to the fact that Wagner as a teacher and coach holds a position of authority over the girl.

Wagner, also president of the Madison Education Association, was placed on paid leave from his coaching and teaching positions Wednesday after a family friend of the 18-year-old Madison student told deputies May 11 that the coach had been sending sexually explicit text messages to the student, said Madison Board of Education President Glenn Cappel.

The investigation — which is ongoing, Smith said Friday — is what led detectives to the 17-year-old girl, according to the sheriff's office.

Wagner is being held in the Butler County Jail in lieu of $20,080 bond, pending future court hearings in Butler County Area III Court in West Chester Twp.

In his second year as head coach of the Mohawks' softball team, Wagner was not at Wednesday's game because he had been placed on leave; however the athletic director said his absence was due to illness.
