Snowshoe Mountain Resort

Lodging at Snowshoe is at the top of the mountain, rather than at the basin. That means skiers and boarders start the day going downhill rather than riding a chairlift.

Forty-one percent of the trails are rated easy for beginners; 36 percent intermediate and 23 percent advanced. The Western Territory at Snowshoe offers experienced skiers the 1.5-mile long black diamond Cupp Run and double-black diamond Shay's Revenge, serviced by a high-speed detachable quad lift.

Besides skiing and snowboarding, Snowshoe offers shopping, dining and nightlife.

Season: Expects to open Nov. 22, depending on weather, through March.

Features: 1,500-foot vertical drop; 57 trails; 13 chairlifts; 600-foot, 5-lane tubing hill; cross-country; snowshoeing; snowmobiling; horse-drawn sleigh rides; 15,400-square-foot family fun center.
