YELLOW SPRINGS – Ice may not be the most popular word this time of year. Add cream after it and the thoughts may get warmer.
So never mind the cake. Just bring the candles when Young’s Jersey Dairy celebrates its 149th anniversary with four days of specials, some for the appropriate amount of $1.49, Friday, Jan. 12 through Monday, Jan. 15 at 6880 Springfield-Xenia Rd.
The anniversary has been recognized for about 15 years as a way of marking Young’s longevity and to share with the public.
“We think it’s cool the farm was founded so long ago, we’re proud of being part of the community and it gives folks something to do in the middle of winter since we get a little lonely this time of year,” said Dan Young, Young’s CEO.
One of the highlights is the red, white and blue sundae, which offers three dips and three toppings for $4.25 with a souvenir glass you can take home. Young said many people collect these each year.
Food specials include one-dip waffle cones, cheeseburgers and kids meals for $1.49 and fried farmstead cheese curds, available at the dairy store and Golden Jersey Inn.
The cheese shop will offer two samplers of eight kinds of farmstead cheese, four in each sampler, made from the dairy’s own milk and made on sight for $5.99.
Even the Udders and Putters golf and miniature golf areas will have $1.49 specials with a medium bucket of balls or a game of miniature golf.
Young is hopeful the weather will cooperate. The crew has shoveled a lot of snow in past years to keep it open when possible.
“There are a few hearty soles who like to play miniature golf this time of year,” he said.
With a majority of the guests coming in from the area at this time of year, Young’s hopes having the extended holiday weekend will give people a chance to get out.
“A lot of our frequent visitors appreciate the prices as a thank you for their business. We hope families can visit the goats or see the cows milked and make it a fun time out.”
