We have a wonderful building just sitting vacant in downtown Hamilton, the old Elder-Beerman store. The council has been talking of dividing the store and turning it into office spaces — for who?
Why not follow the trend of the economy and open up the building as an antique mall? Booth spaces could be rented, commissions paid to the owners, people would be able to downsize their homes, and shoppers could get fantastic values on their purchases. There are several antique malls in the area which would bring in more people.
Downtown needs a draw. Having somewhere to shop would help (improve) downtown’s economy. We need a draw that would bring people in after 5 p.m. in the afternoon and on weekends. There are businesses in downtown that cannot function on a 40-hour work week. We are the City of Sculpture. Why not fine arts also?
