Smoke and mirrors

Hot Topics

3:47 PM Tuesday, June 30, 2009

In reference to the article in the Saturday, June 20, Hamilton JournalNews, “City hall ax falls”: I have to believe this is an attempt at a deception in the wording of this article. It reads that 16 police department employees are being laid off and that three city directors are losing their positions. It sounds like another typical Hamilton smoke-and-mirrors attempt at just moving directors or management personnel around. The low guys on the totem pole — the police department dispatchers and others — are actually being laid off and losing their jobs.

On Sunday, June 21, my son and daughter-in-law were driving through Millikin Woods. Their 16-month-old daughter was in her car seat in the backseat of their vehicle. Someone threw a rock through their side passenger window. I thank God she miraculously only received some scratches on her legs from the glass. The police said it was probably some kid. Parents, please stress the danger of throwing rocks to your children.

I’m responding to the caller who said the fire department is trying to scare citizens to death about the lack of fire protection. I suggest this person spend a little bit of time around the fire department to find out how they do things and what they do exactly. Then take a look at some of the surrounding communities and pay attention to their response times and how they respond. They will realize what a great and fantastic fire department we have here.

Regarding the call about someone concerned about the fireworks for the Fourth of July: All they have to do is come over in the 200 block of Hudson Avenue. There is a fellow who starts shooting them off around 6 p.m. till midnight every night. He’s driving everybody on Hudson crazy. But go ahead and come out. The more the merrier.

A reminder to mail carriers: Please make sure gates are closed before you walk away from a fenced yard. Elderly and handicapped people are not able to close gates to protect their dogs from running away or getting killed by cars. Please leave the ear phones out of your ears. How can a person call out to you to please close the gate that you just left open?

Dear Going Postal

How rude. You should be ashamed of yourself. And shame on the Journal News for letting comments like that be posted.
