On June 19, you published a letter by Katie Hoskinson titled “Totally offensive.” In her brief comment, she said a great deal that deserves a response.
First, she said she is offended that the Sacred Heart Church was attempting “to speak for women everywhere.” She and others like her might consider the fact that one technique of practically every leader and “misleader” of the people is to portray the stance that they are speaking for everyone, or at least the majority. It happens daily. (There is) No need to be distressed or offended when the Catholic Church or anyone else uses the technique. Just understand it is simply that: A technique. It is often effective.
Next, she responded to a sign that said, “Abortion hurts women, too,” when she said: “I am a woman, Abortion does not hurt me.” I might be in error but, to me, that tells us she has never had an abortion.
In addition, I will say this: Just as there are people who care about others and those who could care less, there are two kinds of hurts — mental and physical. We overcome physical hurts on a daily basis, however, mental hurts last a lifetime.
Personally, I simply love the majesty of the female form and I agree with Ms. Hoskinson that her body is sacrosanct. On the other hand, I wonder if she would agree that the unborn is a life. The difference is that it is not a fully independent life.
Ms. Hoskinson added, “Legalized abortion lets (her) know (she) is respected enough by her fellow citizens to allow her to choose what she wants to do with her body.”
I wonder if she has considered the fact that there can be no greater innocence than the unborn, yet that life force has no power to support its wants, needs and/or desires. If the unborn is a life, and it has been proven beyond doubt that it is, there is a chasm between the born and the unborn that must be filled. I wonder if she would agree that someone needs to step up to the plate and move forward to represent that life. It would seem to me that it is not a matter of respect for the sanctity of a woman’s body, but respect for the sanctity of life itself.
... With due respect for Ms. Hoskinson and women in general, I fully support the total innocence of the unborn life and solemnly swear that little life, without exception, trumps the sacrosanctity of the female body.
