Protecting one's turf

It is difficult to lay off safety personnel — as is being considered by commissioners — but they are required by law to have a balanced budget. There have been proposals to find a way to combine or merge the city police into the sheriff’s department, but it seems to fall on deaf ears. No one wants to give up their turf — not even to share a dispatch service. The duplication in these agencies is immense, but if an effective way could be found, the savings would go a long way to provide relief on the city and county’s budgets.

I’ve been reading in the JournalNews that all the candidates who are running for office support small businesses. As a small business owner, I would like to challenge them to support with their money, instead of just their words. If any candidate for a local office comes into my place of business and actually makes a purchase, I will spend an equal amount in another small business in Hamilton. I will do this through the end of the year if anybody is willing to do this.

... This year, my cable TV bill has been raised eight times so far. All I have is the basic and — believe me — it’s the basic. Is anyone else having this trouble? I am on Social Security. What’s the cable company doing to us? We need some kind of regulation. This is getting ridiculous. Pretty soon I’m not going to be able to have cable.

I think the Commissioners should invite Rick Jones to MTV2' Bully Beat-down. The tactic that the budget cuts can only be taken from Sheriff staff is no longer working for him - so he will return to his bullying. Maybe Butler County needs get him to tap out.

The only way that Rick Jones would agree to any joint service is if he is in charge. I don't believe any city would be willing to cede control of its police force to a single elected official (NOT a chief who must answer to City Council). Once that merger occurs, the sheriff could do whatever he wanted with those personnel and assets without any oversight. He doesn't answer to the County commissioners now. Why would he ever answer to the Council of another jurisdiction?.
