I found Leonard Pitts’ column “Struggling in the gray areas of life” (Nov. 15) somewhat refreshing — “somewhat” being the key word.
Mr. Pitts’ admission of his illogic was the refreshing part. Just about everything he writes is illogical; it is about time he owned up to it.
However, I found one part of his piece especially disturbing. In trying to rationalize his illogic, he compares the “classic liberal position ... that opposes capital punishment and supports abortion rights” with the “classic conservative position ... that opposes abortion rights and supports the death penalty.” He calls this “equally fractured logic” — the key word being “equally.” So far in 2009, there have been 45 convicted criminals executed. The last statistics we have on abortion are from 2006 in which the CDC reported 1,206,200 surgical abortions in the U.S.
Either Mr. Pitts missed the day in second-grade math in which the teacher explained “greater than” and “less than” or Mr. Pitts thinks some people are “more equal” than others.
Have we learned nothing in our struggle against racism in this country? When one person or a group of people is considered “more equal” than another person or group of people, the injustice causes great harm. There can be no arguing that of the 1,206,200 people killed in this country by legal abortion, 100 percent of them were totally innocent. Even if — for argument’s sake — we say that all 45 of those executed were innocent, there remains a huge inconsistency with Mr. Pitts’ rationalization.
What would be really refreshing is if the Hamilton JournalNews stopped printing Mr. Pitts’ illogical rants.
