Our new auditor is to be commended for efforts to align current property values in Butler County with the actual market. His efforts are appreciated, but his aim is still far from the mark. True property values are what you can sell your home for today, not what someone in the subdivision sold their home — one that was similar to yours — for last year. It appears that a 10-percent reduction was enacted on home values that were valued at $50,000 to $60,000. The facts are — these homes are selling for $30,000 to $40,000, about 20 percent less than last year. Homeowners are still overpaying by about 10 percent after the reductions, so keep working on this problem, because you still haven’t got it right. The Butler County auditor must be applauded for his efforts.
