‘It’s about character’

I was recently asked to join the “Character Advisory Council” as a parent representative. The topic was something that we have taught in our own home for the past years. I know this is something near and dear to a lot of us parents.

They talked about a new bill — Ohio House Bill 253. In a brief summary, it’s about character (and) everyone applying themselves at a higher level.

In the past two years, our family joined the Reds Rookie Success League as volunteers. Our son grew out of West Side Little League and the next step would have been a traveling team. Our son decided on the Rookie League because the highest of character was shown every day, working with children who might not be so lucky to play in leagues. It teaches character, determination, respect, success and cooperation.

This is when character really became important to our family. The smiles from these children’s faces is the best feeling in the world. Every day we would point to each other and say, “You are looking good.”

At the end of the six weeks, we would cry and promise to keep in touch — to see where their lives go. We, along with our educators, are molding our children to become the best they can be. (They are) Becoming prosperous, compassionate, thriving young men and women (and are) succeeding in a world that has become so demanding.

So, parents, let’s get on board and support this legislation and our schools in their battle to have our children become whatever their dreams may be.
