I am writing because the recent article written by Tiffany Latta really hit home. I am not yet in that situation, but I know that I will be eventually. I have kidney failure and don’t know how much longer they will function.
Currently, we spend a large amount for out-of-pocket medical bills, but they are manageable. When my kidneys fail, I will have to get a transplant.
This opens up a huge area of high-cost medicines and procedures that I will need to live. There are the tests to see if I qualify, surgery, dialysis, and then immunosuppressant drugs.
As many other people in my position, I cannot imagine where that money will come from. And the thought that my husband and children could lose their home so that I may live tears me apart. Thanks for bringing awareness of this problem to the public. I think many who aren’t faced with it don’t grasp the huge impact it has on entire families.
