New Hours?
Lane Library Council reviewed the information concerning usage. They decided that they would recommend to the Lane Library Board that the following change of hours would be at each branch: Monday through Thursday – 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; Friday, Saturday and Sunday – 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Dear - I'm well aware that schools are mandated to provide certain things, busing and sports not being amongst them. Schools aren't required to overpay bloated administrators and greedy teachers so much either, but they do. The fact of the matter is that when cuts have to be made, crooked school boards aim at things like busing - not the fat at the top - because they know parents and taxpayers will give in and pay up to avoid the incinvenience of having to take their kids to school.

For the 1000th time..... Schools are required by law to provide certain services. When you cut your own budget, you usually cut things that are not required to the day to day operation of your home. Busses are NOT a requirement mandated by the state--they are a convenience provided by a district, thus, it is one of the first things cut. The same goes for extracurriculars/sports. I wish people like you would research the truth before you make accusations.

Veteran, the mission statements of public libraries say that they will support the educational, informational and recreational needs of their respective communities. Music CDs, DVDs and video games fill each of those needs along side books. How new formats will impact budgets is discussed before they buy. Besides, libraries only spend about 20% of their budgets on all that and the rest of the things we check out. Spending a lot less than that these days.

Libraries serve a vital function to our community. Where else can people without computers &/or internet access to file for unemployment or fill out job applications? So many places require online applications. Where else can you go for free computer classes? The library gives back so much to the community! It makes sense that libraries would be cut like everyone else, and that was expected, but the 50% is more than a cut -- it will bring most of the libraries in the state to their knees!

Nor has most of the news coverage mentioned that library funding has been stagnant for over a decade. So 1998 funding levels, which were already expected to drop 20% according to the Dept. of Taxation, are proposed to be cut another 32%. Libraries aren't asking not to share the recession burden. They're asking not to carry the whole load. The legislature seems to have heard the message. The vote will tell.

One thing that is not stated in the editorial is that libraries have already been cut 20 percent this year. The governor is proposing another 32 percent on top of this. That would be a total of 52 percent cut to libraries in Ohio. Now is the time to let your voice be heard. See who to contact at:

Libraries are like every other Government operated entity and don't deserve to be spared cutbacks in times of economic distress.

The reason the State is going after the libraries is the same reason crooked school boards are eager to cut busing when economizing must be done - the tyrants in the halls of government know you'll pony up more taxes. People love libraries and like the convenience busing provides. Rather than go without those conveniences, taxpayers will pay up. These racketeeers who run the government are pros at this shell game. They'll cut taxpayers where it hurts before trimming the real fat at the top.

It is hoped that when libraries get through this crisis and survive they will take the opportunity to closely review how they spend public funds. Is it really appropriate for them to purchase music CDs? Computer games? Movies? Perhaps the Boards of Trustees will review their mission statements and operate within them.
