Now that the Nov. 3 election is in the history books, it’s time to direct attention to one of those other annual rituals of November — high school football playoffs.
This year, Butler County football fans have plenty to cheer about, starting tonight, Nov. 6.
That’s when the Ross Rams will travel to Winton Woods for a 7:30 p.m. first-round game in Division II’s Region 8. The 6-4 Ross team is the seventh seed, while the 8-2 Winton Woods team is the second seed.
Meanwhile, the Hamilton Badin Rams (7-3) will go to always-tough Coldwater (9-1) for a 7:30 p.m. game in Division V’s Region 20. Coldwater is the No. 2 seed; Badin is the seventh seed.
Then, on Saturday, Nov. 7, the Lakota West Firebirds (9-1) will travel to Anderson (10-0) for a 7 p.m. game in Division I’s Region 4. Anderson’s Redskins are the No. 3 seed; Lakota West is seeded sixth.
If that’s not enough for you, two other Butler County teams also will see playoff action this weekend. Monroe High School will travel to Dayton’s Chaminade-Julienne in the Division III, Region 12, game at 7:30 p.m. today. And Hamilton’s perennial rival, the Middletown Middies, has returned to the playoffs and will take on the fearsome Moeller Crusaders at 7 p.m. Saturday in Cincinnati in Division I’s Region 4.
We applaud the successful seasons for which these coaches and teams have worked so hard, and — win or lose this weekend — they have provided their fans, parents and friends with exciting memories and generated tremendous spirit in their communities.
And we would be remiss if we did not tip our hats to all the other teams that did not qualify for the playoffs this year, and to the many other fall teams whose athletes also dedicate themselves to their sport and schools.
Of course, we hope you will follow your favorite teams in our pages and on our Web site (www.journal-news.com) this weekend for the best coverage of the playoff games.
We wish the best of luck to all the Butler County teams playing this weekend. You’ve made your communities proud and given local football fans a November weekend to remember.
