A while back, I wrote a letter to the editor in which I suggested that the city of Hamilton should consider selling our public golf courses to privately owned companies that could run them better.
My thought was simply that, since we are spending more tax dollars to run these golf courses than they are bringing in from revenues, we might be wasting our money.
I have had a change of heart on this idea. I now feel that we should hold on to these municipal properties as long as we can, so that — as more people lose their homes and futures, thanks to the local, state and national economies going down the proverbial toilet — these individuals and families can create tent cities to live in.
Seems like a fair trade-off to me: Dignity, self-respect and security in exchange for a prime tent site on the eighth green at Potter’s or Twin Run.
That is what I call a solution — more than any of our leaders from City Hall to Washington, D.C., have come up with so far.
But look at the bright side: The banking industry is flourishing again.
