State finds new low-cost trash-hauling service: You

WAYNESVILLE, Warren County — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is so broke that it’s asking visitors to 30 or so state parks, including Caesar Creek and Cowan Lake, to pack up their trash and haul it out when they leave.

We spend alot of time fishing at Rocky Fork and have seen the pigs and nasty people leave their trash lay. We actually saw a woman changing a diaper and sure enough she left the dirty one lay. Their children had thrown plastic pop and juice containers into the lake. As much as I wanted to tell them to pick up their trash, I decided not to, cause it was obvious they did not care and would have probably been ***** when told to pick up after themselves. Let's send the trash to the Governor!!!

I think taking the trash cans out of
the parks will make people trash it
more cause they wont want to take
their trash home with them.
It dont matter to me cause I
pick up after myself.

There are a lot of people that are to lazy to pick up after themselves. They expect others to come behind and 'take care of it'. Look at all the trash on the roadways and people's yards. It gets thrown from vehicles. To many people just do not care. Thus one of the problems with why the government feels it has to 'run our lives'.

Ohio is the only state I know of that does not charge for day use of its state parks, which is great...unless your broke. Florida charges a nominal fee (about $6 a carload). Perhaps Ohio should institute a fee for day use.

trash pickup is important at state parks. when i camp all my trash goes into the dumpster. if the park rangers would enforce the no litter policy by giving people fines who litter that can pay for trash pick up. instead lets hire more park employees to pick up the trash that will be everywhere. why can't state employees take a paycut? give up their state owned automobiles? i

Is it really such a big deal to clean up after yourselves? If you were raised right, you're already doing that anyway. And if it means that other government programs won't get cut (like funding for libraries) then it's worth it to take care of your own trash.

it's not the government dropping the ball here. "The state" doesn't need to do anything extra. The people utilizing the parks need to own up and be responsible. What's the point of going out to enjoy nature if you're just going to trash it? Then, common sense, respect, decency and rational thought is a bit too much to ask of Americans these days, so we should just complain until the gov't picks up our mess for us.

I was just as shocked one am when talking to the cleaning crew at CC a few weeks ago. Joe Public has no concern for cleaning up after themselves. A poor decision on the part of parks. The workers indicated that the state could no longer afford rumpke.

Deerscrack, Caesars Stink Lake, you name it. Putting cement pads for people to park their SUVs or hillbilly RVs isn't camping, Ohio. Just because you dig a lake on some farmland doesn't make it a park.

First the state legislature wanted to put oil drilling in the state parks. How stupid is that? Now they remove the trash cans. In a state where well over 90% of the original trees have been cut down and natural areas are hard to find due to development and farm land, we need to protect and invest in our parks.

Are you kidding? People clean up after themselves? People throw trash on the ground even when there are trash cans. This has got to be one of the dumbest ideas ever. Talk to your local waste haulers, I'm sure you can get a discounted rate if you use one hauler for all parks. DUH!

Just came back from Hueston Woods State Park, all of their picnic areas display a sign saying to please remove your trash as there are no trash recepticles in the picnic areas. Silly!

this has to be one of the least thought out ideas the state of ohio park system has ever had!
Not even to have trash cans in the bathrooms?! Come on-i would rather see them cut the grass less-than remove the trashcans! plus-how much is it going to cost tax payers to 'post signs' about the no trash pick up-why not use that money to keep a few trash cans around!

Using inmates to clean up the parks is a good idea, but how feasible is it? How far will they have to ride to reach these parks? How many officers will be needed to watch them in such large, open areas? Folks can blame whomever they want, but the sad fact is that it's just a sign of the times. My father-in-law use to be a Scout leader and they'd mow lawns all Summer. Perhaps the Boy & Girl Scouts could start campaigning to help keep the parks clean?

We boat at Cesar's Creek, we take our trash. Unfortunatlly some people do not care about keeping the rest rooms clean, and are lazy. Last week the trash was piled knee high in the restrooms Come on people let's respect our weekend getaway and clean up after yourselves. I wonder what there houses look like

It's common sense to police after yourself. Remember the commercial with the "indian" in his canoe paddling through all that garbage in his stream? That's always stuck in my mind.
Also, I read where Yosemite and other parks out west do not want you leaving your solid excrement in the bush either. There's a company that makes "bags" for you to put your doo-doo in and carry out of the park to dispose of. Hope we don't start that as well...

A solution needs to be found for this, and fast, or the parks will have to be closed. The Indiana approach sounds OK to me.

I am not yet convinced that Ohio's state government has streamlined itself all it can -- there are still 24 Cabinet-level departments. Certainly some of the can be merged.

Why is anyone surprised that ignorant slobs don't pick up after themselves and their illiterate spawn? They didn't when the trash cans were 20 feet away, they're certainly not going to now.

What's wrong with people in our local jails picking up the trash. Why do they just get to sit there and do nothing. Ever heard of a chain gang? Put them to some use! What's wrong with our government!

Just visited Houston Woods over the weekend. Trash everywhere. A true shame. How hard is it to pick up your own trash? Most likely the people who are throwing f-bombs at their children. Have some respect for other people.

We too were at the beach at Caesar Creek on June 19th. Found no trash cans and no posted signs explaining the "haul-as-you-go" policy. We took our trash with us but some people do not know to do that. It was shocking to see trash on the side of the entrance road as we entered and exited the park. What a shame.

why don't ohio start charging a small fee like $5.00 a car going into a state park.
Indiana does it and their parks are beautiful, because they can afford to pay someone to clean them up.
If it is some one from out of state charge a little extra. that way the parks will be cleaner.

Trash cans or not - my husband and I frequent these parks with the motto, leave it better than we found it. Even with trash cans, we walk out of these places having picked up almost more trash than we can carry - people just don't care and feel the earth is their trash can.

We noticed at Burr Oak that there were no trash cans and had no place to throw things away. We hauled our own trash but how many else will? Strickland needs to get a clue. First he trashes our state parks and next he is cutting funding to our libraries. NCR left because Dayton was not "smart enough". Now we are going to be dumb and trashy. Does he think he will get re-elected this way?

Some people are not getting the message becasue they just don't care. some (not all) folks are disgusting in their regards to keeping the enviroment clean. Look around folks, trash is everywhere. They won't throw it away when there are trash cans available, and now??

ASSET: Good call, get the lazy bum prisoners out and let them pick up the trash....while we honest hard working citizens keep paying for their room and board...wake up taxpapyers....

I think the state of Ohio should have planned and saved for a rainy day. You can't spend every dime you make in good times and expect there to never be bad times ahead. The state should charge admission to the parks like other states.

Next they will close the restrooms. Several states are already closing rest areas. Once the restrooms are closed we will be told that if bears can do it in the woods, so can we.

Also, many have posted about the cleanliness of the parks that they have witnessed without trashcans--yet they remain clean. I'm sure if you talk to the road crews in the region they'll tell you that people just wait until they leave the park and toss it.

Indiana has done this for a few years now with great success. They hand you a trash bag when you pay your fee to enter the park, and you take your trash with you. Not only has it worked well, with no trash laying about, but it has had the added benefit of elminating the problems of sweat bees and other bugs that would swarm around the trash cans.

It may take some time for people to adjust to the new arrangement, but it can work.

I propose all registered Republicans should be compelled to clean our parks. By promoting and electing the Bozo's that put our Country in the situation it's in they should be made to work extra hours to help clean up the mess.
It would really be nice if the head Bozo's Cheney and Bush would grab a trash bag and stop their opinions on how wonderful they are.

Place trash cans back in the park(s), and use local prisoners from the county the park is located in to empty the cans. I visited Georgia, and they use local prisoners on state roads and freeways to do road side clean up. It's "free" labor, and gives the future Obama voters something to do...since they're all innocent anyway...

Brilliant idea...remove the trash cans so that the parks can become cluttered with garbage. This way they can spend even more trying to clean the mess, now that is smart government at work. It isn't enough there are people out there that are to lazy to walk the 50 ft to throw away their garbage now, we now expect those same lazy people to bring garbage bags and haul away their own trash. Brilliant, just brillian.

It is unforuniate that the state has come to this, I can understand the policy if there is no money, personally don't have a problem & will make sure to take a trash bag along;there are so many lazy people I fear it will trash the park & water I can see it definatley getting worse then of course they will have to pay someone to come in and pick up what the lazy no good people who don't care for anything including there surroundings to clean up. What a shame..

I visit state park in Indiana a couple of times a year and they have had the "CARRY OUT YOUR TRASH" policy for years now and their parks are clean. Why can't the people in Ohio pick up their mess before they leave??

Great idea!! Remove the trash cans, to save expenses on trash pick up. Increased litter results because there is no trash cans; therefore resulting in the need for liter removal and trash pick up of the litter. So instead of one service being paid for, now two services are needed. Great way to save money.

New Jersey has had a policy like this for several years. None of their state parks have trash cans in the day use areas -- with no increase in litter. Everybody packs it out.

If people in New Jersey can do it, so can we.

Removing trash cans from parks is about akin to the removal of post-office boxes and stamp vending machines that use real money, plain not bright!
People will leave trash thus creating greater costs in the long-run to pay for clean-up.
And we know the post-office's moves are actually costing us more which is passed on in higher stamp costs.

Why not just have people on community service pick it up? And wow, "teachers aide and pround of it" - I'm really glad my kids are homeschooled if you're an example of what passes for a teacher these days. I'm assuming you meant the possessive form as in "teacher's aide" and I'm guessing you're "proud" as I have no idea what pround means. Let's just hope you learn a little compassion (and maybe some grammar) before you have your own classroom.

Starvanation. 1. Teachers are NOT government employees. 2. You must have not completed high school, if you think they are. And 3. How about having all you that are on government assistance that my taxes are paying for, so you can sit on your lazy butt, spend your summer picking up the trash.

My family is on the low end of the economy scale and I don't have ANY problem paying the yearly fee to go to Butler County Park or a Hamilton County Park where they still have trash cans.(at least the parks we visited do.)I help support my local economy by having a person employed by the park and enjoy a healthy visit while we are there. We're not slackers either. We do our part and pick up around our area before we leave, whether or not we left the litter.

A real good way to cut goverment waste and make use of idle goverment employee time would be to have all the teachers pick up the trash in all the parks----afterall---they,re off all summer!

Good choice, OH DNR! Pack it in, pack it out is the way to go.
People who leave trash where there used to be trash cans are very inconsiderate and disrespectful of the natural places they are visiting. They need to learn how to take responsibility for their waste. I thought people were smarter than that - that is littering!

I recently visited parks in California, Oregon, and Washington State and they had no trash cans. Unfortunitly we were traveling long distances and had to put our trash in the can at the next gas station that we stopped at. I would rather see the trash cans removed than have a $10.00 visitor charge each time I visit my home state parks. Good choice Ohio!!
