Jim Morris' area fishing report for Oct. 1

Hot Topics

By Jim Morris, Staff Writer Updated 3:09 AM Thursday, October 1, 2009

Caesar Creek Lake: Rough water conditions have kept fishing to a minimum. But with temperatures dropping, fishing should improve. Crappies have been deep, 20 feet or more. Saugeye have been caught around the island and on the flats. Try fishing the creeks for catfish, using nightcrawlers or cut shad.

C.J. Brown Reservoir: With high winds keeping boats ashore, most of the fishing has been off of the rocks near the dam. A mixture of walleyes, white bass and catfish has been reported with all being caught with minnows. A few walleyes have hit nightcrawlers fished off the bank near the marina. The larger crappies have been moving in, biting on minnows and waxworms.

Acton Lake: Crappie fishing has picked up around brush close to shore. Use minnows or waxworms and fish at varying depths. Bass have been moving toward shallow water and are being caught on spinners and plastics. Catfish have been caught on minnows and nightcrawlers.

Indian Lake: Low water conditions have kept many boaters off of the lake. And high winds have made the main lake rough in recent days. Over the weekend, perch were being caught off of Pew Island. Redworms fished on the bottom worked best. Crappies have been caught from under docks on jigs and minnows. Saugeye fishing should improve as the water temperature drops.

Grand Lake St. Marys: Crappies are still biting in the channels, but they are hiding out under docks and pontoons or in brush. Use small jigs or minnows. Bluegills have been hitting waxworms and small white split-tails around wood in the channels. Catfish have been caught in the bays on chubs and cut bait.

Lake Loramie: Crappies are generally deep and scattered. Fish deep with minnows or look for shad action on the surface and toss in a two-inch white twister. Bluegills are in the brush, hitting waxworms and redworms. Saugeyes have taken minnows fished close to the bottom and a few perch have been caught at the east end of the lake.

Rocky Fork Lake: Poor fishing has been reported for all species, mostly due to windy conditions. Try fishing off of the docks near the old restaurant, jigging with jigs and minnows. Crappies have been deep. A few perch have been caught on redworms. Bluegill fishing has been slow, but a few are still hitting waxworms in the coves.

Paint Creek Lake: Crappies have been scattered and deep. Look for wood and fish with minnows or jigs. A few crappies, saugeyes and catfish have been caught in the spillway.

Lake Erie: Perch fishing continues to be good when weather permits. Recent winds have made the Western Basin muddy, making all fishing more difficult. As the water clears, fish for perch east of Kelleys Island, around Green and Rattlesnake Islands, near Niagara Reef, off of Catawba and Cedar Point.

Walleye fishing has been slow. Try the West Reef area off of North Bass Island and from Kelleys Island Shoal to the Canadian border. In the Central Basin, fish the northwest side of the sandbar or try evening fishing on Ruggles Reef.

Smallmouth fishing has been best over the reef complex and around the Bass Islands. Use tubes or large minnows.
