Location & description:

Lake Cumberland is located in Wayne, Russell, Pulaski, Clinton, McCreary, Laurel, and Whitley counties in southeastern Kentucky on the Cumberland River. Lake Cumberland is one of the ten largest lakes in the nation. It has 1250 miles of federally protected shoreline. Towns in the area are Albany, Burnside, Jamestown, Russell Springs, and Somerset.

Boating

Lake Cumberland at it's largest, has a surface area of over 63,000 acres, 1255 miles of shore line, and boating ranging from yachts to sailboats to speed boats to fishing crafts (rent or bring your own). The surface water temperature during the summer months range from 78 to 83 degrees and 40-45 degrees during the winter. The deepest part of Lake Cumberland is 200 feet at 723’ pool elevation and is located in the original river channel near the dam.

Fishing

The fishing season begins early on Lake Cumberland, from then on the action gets better. As the lake warms up topwater lures produce the explosive strikes that make grown men shake with excitement. After the bass spawn, usually in late April or early May, the plastic worm begins to replace the crankbaits and surface lures on the business end of the fishing rod. Summer find bass around deep points, drop off's and boat docks. And just when you think the action's going to end, the cool weather of October and November brings the bass back in the shallows for some more fast fishing action.
