Bengals sign “Mouth of the South,” end Coffman’s season
The man quarterback Carson Palmer used to jokingly call “The Mouth of the South” is back with the Cincinnati Bengals and rookie tight end Chase Coffman’s disappointing season is over.
Defensive tackle Shaun Smith, known for his constant trash-talking, is back with the team after stints with the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions and, most recently, Las Vegas of the United Football League.
The 6-foot-2, 325-pound Smith played in 29 games with 6 starts for the Bengals from 2004-06 and went to Cleveland as an unrestricted free agent in 2007. He played for the Browns in 2007 and 2008. He has 60 career NFL games played, with 26 starts, and has compiled 184 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and three passes defensed.
Coffman, a third-round pick in the 2009 draft, was expected to give the Bengals a lift at the tight end position this season. Although he’s a prolific pass-catcher at the college level, Coffman struggled all preseason to pick up blocking techniques required at the NFL level.
Coffman was placed on the Reserve/Injured list, due to bone spurs in his left ankle.
Also Wednesday, the Bengals signed cornerback Antonio Smith, a second-year NFL player from Ohio State, to the practice squad.
Smith (5-9, 190) is in his second stint this year with Cincinnati, having previously been on the practice squad from Nov. 24 through Nov. 30. He entered the NFL in 2007 as a college free agent with Indianapolis, and spent the regular season on the Colts’ Reserve/Injured list. He was waived by Indianapolis during the 2008 preseason and was briefly on the Detroit practice squad during the 2008 regular season. He was with Detroit and San Diego during the 2009 preseason.

The Bengals will seriously regret this decision after he punches Carson Palmer in the face.

I think this section of the article gives it away: “Coffman was placed on the Reserve/Injured list, due to bone spurs in his left ankle.” Read Bengals fans, read.

“Coffman was placed on the Reserve/Injured list, due to bone spurs in his left ankle.” Antwan Odom is on the same list, and yes, it’s the same as IR; this is the “official” term for IR. Coffman, like Odom, is ineligible to return to the field this season. For NickM, Mr. Smith will most assuredly lose his position with the Bengals should he punch Mr. Palmer in the face. I doubt he’s willing to take that risk (and I think the “mouth of the south” comment is complimentary, not derogatory).

It’s the same size print in my browser Matt. And according to the dateline, it was posted at 11:09 AM today; nearly an hour and a half before your first post. When they update articles, the time changes—I don’t see that here. Perhaps you should take your own advice.

You know, people never seem tougher than when they are sitting at a computer and typing. I wonder how many of these comments would be made if the people were face to face. Just something to ponder. And by the way, WHO DEY??? Super Bowl baby. and for people who actually know me, I made that statement at the beginning of the season. No bandwagoner’s here.

The ONLY reason why people don’t know about their team is because they are BANDWAGON FANS! When their team sucks, they go find a good team & when they are good, they start rushing back. NOT REAL FANS!!!

To get to the SB, they will need to get past Indy and SD and the other Div leaders. I don’t see that going on. I see Vikes beating them really bad. I will trade my teams Super Bowls for all the past wining seasons the Bungals have had. YEAH I am talking Steelers. Doesn’t matter if they lost to them this year. The year they won SB Cincy beat them at Pitt, then Pitt came back to beat Cincy at home and later won their 5th SB. How many SB has Cincy Won? Yeah That’s what I thought ZERO.. Indy and NO in SB. Then watch Cincy fall apart in 2010 and go 4-12 for the next 5 years. Typical Bunglas and fans.

The year the steelers won their 5th SB they cheated they knew they couldn’t win if Palmer played the whole game. If people could read the whole article they would know that Coffman is just on the IR and will be the starter next year as all the other TE are useless on this team. As far as the other division leaders in the AFC we can roll them as we do have SD after Minnesota and Indy can’t do anything if they don’t get the ball oh and their rookie corners will be exposed. Patriots are on the decline and last SD we would have already beat them and we will welcome them to the jungle. Now the minnesota game we are the #2 run defence so good luck peterson, and they do suck in the secondary as well so we will see. I say we win 24-20. Who dey!!!!

I have been a bengals fan for many, many years. I do not bandwagon. What’s amusing is to get on the steelers web site. Gloom and doom. Benglas win one of the next 4 games and they are in the playoff’s. Dosen’t matter what the steelers and Ravens do. I don’t care if there is a home game or not. Actually they play better on the road. Bengals have no one to blame for Coffman but themselves. They knew he was not a blocking TE when they drafted him. That position has cost them at least 5 TD’S this season, one this past sunday. Steeler fans!!! A little adversity and you immediately refer to the past. That’s history, who care’s? Same with the bengals loosing years. That’s history. Who cares? Bengals may loose sunday but they wont be beaten bad.

Saun Smith was the person that went to Cleveland and while at one of their fan club meetings said that Chad Johnson punched Marvin Lewis when Marvin tried to get between an argument Chad had with a former Bengals reciever coach Hue I can’t think of his last name. That’s why I think he’s called the mouth of the South

Shawn Smith is a fat, lazy slob. Palmer better watch out…this slob likes to punch quarterbacks in the weightroom. Just ax Brady Quinn.

Uncoolio, Who are these Steelers that you speak of. That answer is easy. Defending Super Bowl Champions. Something you will never call a Bengal. Unless of course he leaves the Natti and goes to a winner.
