What do you want Gov. Kasich to focus on in 2017?

Once again, Ohio Gov. John Kasich is taking his annual State of the State address to the General Assembly on the road, and this time he is asking lawmakers to travel to Sandusky for the event on April 4.

“Lake Erie has always held a special place in my heart, dating back to wonderful vacations I enjoyed there as a child. The towns and cities along the lake’s coastline – like Sandusky – are important parts of our state and our tourism industry,” the governor said in a written release. “Holding the State of the State address in Sandusky, on the shore of Ohio’s Great Lake, will be the perfect opportunity to show off our state’s crown jewel.”

What are the issues?

At the state of the state, Kasich is expected to push his state budget plan which would lower income taxes for most Ohioans, but raise sales taxes, cigarette taxes and taxes on beer and wine.

The sales tax, which currently sits at 5.75 percent, would be applied to more services, such as lawn care, face lifts, interior decorating, cable TV subscriptions, travel packages, repossession services and lobbying, according to the Kasich budget highlights.

The governor also is proposing increases in taxes on oil and natural gas production, but acknowledged that — like in previous years — legislators are likely going to reject it.

Gov. John Kasich is proposing a 1 percent increase in K-12 education funding, plus changes in how schools are linked to college and business pathways.

Kasich always moves the state of the state

After holding his first State of the State address in Columbus in 2011, Kasich has moved the annual event to different corners of Ohio: Steubenville, Medina, Lima, Wilmington and Marietta.

The Legislature must grant his request to hold it in Sandusky.

Coaster fans may be disappointed to learn they won’t be able to pair the State of the State with a ride on Top Thrill Dragster: Cedar Point doesn’t open until early May.
