Rob Portman sworn in for 2nd term in U.S. Senate

Golfing legend Jack Nicklaus was among more than 200 people who attended a reception today where U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito delivered a ceremonial oath of office to Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, who began his second term in the U.S. Senate.

Although Vice President Joe Biden earlier in the day delivered the official oath to Portman, the reception held on Capitol Hill allowed scores of Portman’s supporters to watch Alito repeat the oath in a cermonial fashion.

In addition to Nicklaus, the gathering included such prominent Ohio Republicans as Secretary of State Jon Husted, Attorney General Mike DeWine, and state Treasurer Josh Mandel, as well as long-time Portman advisers and financial supporters.

A handful of Democrats attended with none more prominent than Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio, who during the 2016 Senate race refrained from harsh criticism of Portman.

Portman was re-elected to the Senate in November after defeating former Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland.
