The only thing more impressive than scoring 50 points in a basketball game is going for more. That’s what Trischa Lacy of Urbana High School did last Saturday at Graham.

The senior tallied a season-high 52 points in a 68-61 setback. She stuck 17-of-38 shots, connected on 7-of-20 3-pointers and converted 11 -of-13 free throws before fouling out. She also was good for 11 rebounds, two steals and two assists.

That still couldn’t prevent the Hillclimbers (9-13) from dropping their fifth straight contest. Lacy previously tallied 50 in a 77-71 defeat of Indian Lake last month.

The University of Tennessee-Martin signee is averaging a robust 30.5 points. Her season low is 17 points against Tecumseh (21-1).

Tough stuff: How is it that top-ranked Thurgood Marshall (20-1), Franklin (16-3), Alter (15-4) and Dunbar (15-5) find themselves once again lumped in the same Division II boys basketball sectional? Because not enough participating coaches petitioned the Southwest District to consider an open draw.

All four of those teams are ranked among the state’s top 10, with Thurgood earning the No. 1 seed at Sunday’s tourney drawing.

Division IV also is locked into predetermined fields. In contrast, all the D-I and D-III boys sectionals are open. That means those teams could place themselves on any bracket at any location of those respective sectionals.

Besides petitioning the Southwest District board, it must also make sense logistically for a sectional to be deemed open.

In D-II, that ensures some great early tourney matchups. But it also goes against the norm, that the best are positioned to last the longest, like the upcoming March Madness brackets.

There is one major change in D-II: The Vandalia Butler Student Athletic Center will split games with Fairmont’s Trent Arena. Butler bumps Miamisburg as a host site from last season.

Lend a helping yell: The Fairmont JV swim team has a new fan: Lebanon intervention specialist Kathleen Hytla.

An assistant coach for the Warriors’ swim team, Hytla was moved by the Firebirds’ student cheering section that went all out for special needs Lebanon swimmer “Matt” during several races of the recent Greater Western Ohio Conference meet.

Wrote Hytla in an email to the Kettering school district: “Having the kids cheering for him made not only his entire night, but probably his entire tenure here at Lebanon. … You should be proud of your students because they represented your district well.”

Can’t beat that: Coldwater athletic director Eric Goodwin reports that the Cavaliers tied Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary for the most team state championships in 2012 with three each. Coldwater’s boys and girls bowling teams swept team state titles. The Cavs also were the D-V state football champs.

In all, Midwest Athletic Conference teams earned seven state team titles, including Marion Local (two), Minster and Versailles (one each).
