Three-sport standout heads hall of fame list

Former Ross three-sport standout Laura Rullman Weinberger is among 11 inductees in the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame class of 2012.

Weinberger will be joined by Frank Chew, Jeff Cothran, Lois Hall Gleason, Rob Huffman, Tracey Kornau, Matt McIntire, Terry Merz, Bernie Reid, Jeff See and Rich White in the 11 member class.

The Hall of Fame banquet will be held on Sunday at the Courtyard by Marriott in Hamilton beginning with a social hour at 5 p.m.. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. with the program beginning one hour later. Tickets cost $25 and are available at Tom’s Cigar Store, 135 Main St. in the Hamilton area, or by calling (513) 423-7734 in the Middletown area.

Weinberger was a three-sport standout all four years at Ross High School in volleyball, basketball and track and field, earning 12 varsity letters. She was the first Ross athlete — male or female — to achieve that feat.

Weinberger earned all-league status in all three sports. She also was a District 15 all-star in basketball, played in the East-West All-Star volleyball game as a senior, and was a three-time district champion in the high jump and a state qualifier.

Gleason played field hockey and basketball at Miami University from 1950-54. After graduation, she became a health and physical education teacher at Fairfield High School, where she coached basketball and softball. Gleason also kept the scorebook for the Hamilton High School girls’ varsity and junior varsity basketball teams for 19 years.

Merz played in 27 straight games for Taft High School over three seasons, including his junior and senior seasons in which he played both offensive and defensive tackle.

Merz played four years at Wittenberg University, including being a starting member of the 1973 nationalchampionship team. Merz also spent more than 30 years coaching high school football in the Hamilton, Princeton, Lakota West and Talawanda school districts.

White competed in baseball, basketball and cross country during his career at Fairfield,.

White played three years for the Indians’ baseball team, earning Greater Miami Conference honors all three seasons and MVP honors as a senior. He played baseball at Columbia State Community College and North Carolina State before being drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays.
