Second-quarter surge lifts Lebanon to first win

TROY —

After dropping their first two games by double digits and seeing their slim lead disappear Friday, the Lebanon Warriors decided they’d had enough.

The Troy Trojans, who entered winless in their first three games, hope to get there soon.

A key second-quarter surge gave Lebanon a cushion, then the Warriors pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 49-34 win in a Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover game. After Troy took its only lead of the game — 15-14 with six minutes left in the first half — Lebanon responded by ripping off a 14-3 run.

The win was Lebanon’s first (1-2) following a 14-point loss to Springfield and a 12-point loss to Mason.

“I think these guys are sick and tired of losing,” Lebanon coach Matt Higgins said of the difference on Friday. “Two teams got in our face and we decided that’s what we needed to do to everybody else.”

Unofficially, Lebanon outrebounded Troy 27-20 and benefited from 22 turnovers from the Trojans (0-4). Lebanon had 15. The Warriors used four of those turnovers during that second-quarter run to take a 28-18 halftime lead.

“Obviously nobody enjoys losing,” Troy coach Tim Miller said. “Maybe it just hasn’t hurt us enough to change it. That’s where experience and leadership come into play. That’s what we’re lacking right now. We show it in flashes but we don’t sustain anything.”

The flashes came in the third quarter. Troy sliced that halftime deficit to four and the defense allowed only a three-pointer with a minute left in the quarter. But Lebanon’s Zach Beckner took over in the fourth with 12 of his game-high 16 points. His basket with 5:51 to play gave the Warriors a 37-26 double-digit lead they never lost. Bradd Ellis and Ben Esposito both added 11 points.

“I thought our players absolutely got after it sliding on the floor, being distracting, getting in the way and playing as hard as they can. That’s so important,” Higgins said.

Dylan Cascaden led Troy with 11 points.

“We play in spells,” Miller said. “We’ve shown we can do some decent things out there when we play with a little fortitude. But we don’t play hard all the time. … We have to start trusting each other on the floor and trust what we run on the floor. We haven’t gotten there on a consistent basis.”
