Raiders visit high-scoring Detroit

By David Jablonski

DETROIT —

Wright State got a preview of what postseason basketball is like Saturday.

There were few empty seats at Valparaiso, and a packed student section, with everyone dressed in the same grey T-shirts, except for some shirtless guys up front. They all shouted at the Raiders on every free-throw attempt in the second half.

If the Raiders make a run in the Horizon League tournament later this season or advance beyond that, it’s the type of atmosphere they should expect. For the most part, they held up well under the pressure, leading a veteran Valparaiso team until the final two minutes before losing 69-63.

“It’s our first game where the crowd was like that,” said Wright State sophomore guard Reggie Arceneaux said. “I’m really proud of our guys, how we responded, how we battled.”

Arceneaux, who scored 14 points, wasn’t bothered by the noise.

“Maybe in the time-outs you notice it,” he said, “but after that, you’re zoned into the game.”

The Raiders’ five-day, three-game road trip continues with a 7 o’clock game tonight at Detroit, the lone Horizon League team to make the NCAA tournament last season. It’s a matchup of the highest-scoring team in the league and the best defense. Detroit averages 79.4 points per game, and Wright State gives up 56.6.

The Raiders (13-5, 4-1) rank eighth out of nine teams in scoring (62.1), and Detroit ranks last in defense (69.7).

“The key with them is you’ve got to slow their transition game,” Wright State coach Billy Donlon said. “And you can’t turn the ball over. You have to get shots, and you have to make them guard you at the other end of the floor.”

Detroit can put up big numbers. It routed Illinois-Chicago 98-47 on Saturday and beat Youngstown State 101-60 on Jan. 10. If the Titans (12-7, 4-2) hadn’t blown a 22-point lead at home against Valparaiso on Thursday, they would be in first place instead of Valparaiso (15-5, 5-1).

Wright State had an evening practice Sunday, and all the focus was on Detroit — not on the game the Raiders just lost.

“We’ll learn from the Valpo game the next time we play Valpo,” Donlon said. “We’ll learn a few things from the late-game decisions for the future, but we’ll move on to Detroit. That’s how it’ll work two days later when we play Youngstown (7 p.m. Wednesday). You can’t get caught up in the last game.

“The big thing is we have to play with some confidence. We can’t be dejected and downtrodden. It’s not going to do us any good. We have to come to Detroit with the same mindset we had (at Valparaiso), play with the same urgency and same energy and the same confidence level to have a chance (tonight).”
