Bengals’ Dunlap knows Jags’ Jones-Drew well

CINCINNATI —

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Carlos Dunlap knows Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drew as a fierce competitor on several fronts.

The two went against each other on the field last year when the Bengals beat the Jaguars 30-20, but Dunlap has gone head-to-head with Jones-Drew many more times in other settings.

“We play Madden all the time,” Dunlap said, referring to the football video game. “He’s really good at it. He’s intense. He likes the strong running backs, so whoever has a strong running back or a strong running game, that’s who he plays with.”

Dunlap and Jones-Drew also spend a lot of time together working out in the offseason.

“We’ve been training together for about three years,” Dunlap said. “Even when we train together, we’re always competing. I know what kind of work ethic he has, and you see it on film. You’ve got to come at him, you’ve got to gang tackle and just make sure you wrap him up. He’s short and he runs with his pads low, so that makes it even harder to tackle him, especially taller guys like me.”

Jones-Drew has scored a touchdown in both of his career games against Cincinnati, but he hasn’t gotten loose for a lot of damage, logging 29 carries for 118 yards.

Cocktail connection: The return to Jacksonville’s EverBank Field for a second year in a row is sure to stir college memories for eight Bengals players who played at least one game there every year as members of the University of Georgia and University of Florida football teams.

The annual battle between the Bulldogs and Gators, known as the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, is waged every year on the neutral field in Jacksonville. Geno Atkins, Clint Boling, Orson Charles, Robert Geathers, A.J. Green and Dennis Roland played in the border rivalry for Georgia, while Carlos Dunlap and Reggie Nelson played at Florida.

Nelson also has plenty of professional memories at the stadium. The Jaguars’ first-round pick in 2007, Nelson played three seasons in Jacksonville before being traded to the Bengals prior to the start of 2010.

Injury update: Cornerback Nate Clements missed his third consecutive day of practice Friday with a calf injury and is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game in Jacksonville. Cornerback Jason Allen (thigh) also is listed as doubtful, and cornerback Leon Hall (hamstring), who missed last week’s game at Washington, is questionable.

That could leave the Bengals with just two healthy cornerbacks in Adam Jones and Terence Newman.

Center Jeff Faine (hamstring), linebacker Roddrick Muckelroy (illness) and running back Bernard Scott (ankle) also are questionable, while defensive ends Carlos Dunlap (knee) and Michael Johnson (foot), tackle Andrew Whitworth (knee) and safety Reggie Nelson (shoulder) are probable.

Turnover tale: The Bengals are one of four NFL teams to own a winning record despite a negative turnover differential. The Bengals (2-1) are minus-3 in turnovers this season with five giveaways and two takeaways. Only the 2-1 Philadelphia Eagles (minus-6) have a worse differential among winning teams. Dallas (2-1) is minus-3, and San Diego (2-1) is minus-2.
