OXFORD — Talawanda High School used its depth to sweep the Fort Ancient Valley Conference West Division boys tennis tournament Tuesday at Miami University’s Hepburn courts.

Two other Butler County FAVC West Division teams did not fare as well due to a shortage of players, but both coaches expressed the hope that their programs could rise up in the future.

The tournament counts for half of the league title and few schools have completed their league slates, but the tournament was moved up a week from the usual schedule and differing spring break schedules prevented finishing the head-to-head matches in time.

Seeded first in each of the brackets, the Braves took first on all five courts — three singles, two doubles.

Talawanda got a championship at first singles from senior Kailin Wu, whom coach Pete Thomas said is the likely player of the year in the conference, as he defeated his Northwest opponent in the championship match.

Talawanda got the second singles title from senior Andrew Jarvi (6-0, 6-0) and the third singles title from senior Alex Danielson (6-2, 6-1).

The first doubles title went to the Talawanda senior duo of Evan Bader and Bo Stephenson (7-6, 6-4) and the second doubles title with juniors Bobby Bennett and Mason Miller (6-4, 7-6).

“We got the sweep. It feels good,” Thomas said. “It’s the last year of the (FAVC) and going 6-for-6 has been a goal of mine. Players come and go, but I stay around. We’ve won all five years we were in the league (prior to 2012) and it feels good to keep that level of a program.”

Edgewood and Ross, however, found themselves at a big disadvantage on the sunny and breezy day.

Neither had a player finish higher than fourth place.

Talawanda is looking to capture the final two FAVC matches of the season and finish league play undefeated and with its sixth title in six years in the FAVC. Those will come at home Monday against Norwood and at Winton Woods on May 4.
