TRENTON —
It was the Torey Stang Show Wednesday night at Edgewood High School.
Stang, a 5-foot-2 junior for Badin’s girls basketball team, finished with 17 points, three assists and four steals as the third-seeded Rams moved into Saturday’s Edgewood Division III sectional final against Preble Shawnee with a 54-35 win over seventh-seeded North College Hill (13-10).
“I have never seen anyone that is as competitive as she is,” Badin coach Tom Sunderman said after the Rams improved to 11-12. “Every bone in her body is competitive. She probably competes like that in a game of chess; she is that competitive every day in practice.”
Stang fueled two runs to put the Trojans away. The last, to start the second half, pushed the lead to 30-17 early in the third quarter. North College Hill never got within 10 again as Badin closed the third quarter with back-to-back 3s by Alexa Krusenklaus and Casie Brandenburg to enter the final stanza with a 42-21 lead.
“We had said we wanted another run to start the second half,” Sunderman said. “We had noticed that once they (North College Hill) get down, they fold. If they are in the game, they are like a shark that smells blood and they come after you; we thought that run to start the second half would make them go away.”
Stang owned the show from the opening tip. She fueled the first run when she drained a 3 from the left corner less than 30 seconds into the game to give the Rams a lead that would never be threatened. Stang scored 10 of Badin’s 15 first-quarter points as the Rams took a 15-5 lead.
“I think it was important for us to get off to that fast start,” Sunderman said. “They are starting to see the tough schedule we play is paying off for us, but mentally, we needed to get the early lead so our confidence stayed up.”
McKenzie Eagan (10 points) got in on the act in the second quarter, bookending a 3 by Stang with a pair of short jumpers as the Rams opened a 22-7 lead with 5:03 left in the half. North College Hill made a short run midway through the second quarter to trim the deficit to 22-14 with 2:05 left, but Stang answered to push the lead back to 10.
The Rams forced 30 turnovers, but they were outrebounded 22-19 and had 21 turnovers.
“We have to cut our turnovers down.” Sunderman said. “We have a lot of sophomores playing, not to make excuses, but we get some of those unforced turnovers. They will get connected and that helps us now and for the next couple of years.”
