Scoring drought costs Hamilton

By Mark Schmetzer

SHARONVILLE —

Hamilton chose the wrong time to go cold on offense.

The Big Blue led 52-50 with 4:13 remaining in its Greater Miami Conference game Friday at Princeton. Hamilton went scoreless for the next 3:37 while the Vikings were enjoying a 9-0 run that paved the way for a 61-54 win.

Freshman guard A’Shon Riggins scored 14 points and junior guard Christian Jones added 11 for the Big Blue (7-11, 3-8), but that wasn’t enough to offset the four Princeton players who reached double figures, led by senior guard Deiontay Walters’ 18 points. Senior guard-forward Darius Hilson logged a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Princeton (9-8, 6-5), which snapped a three-game losing streak.

Sophomore forward Jamil Daniels connected on an eight-foot jumper to give Hamilton its last lead. Senior guard Dorian Jordan gave Princeton the lead for good with a 3-pointer from the right wing with 3:36 left in the game.

The Vikings went 7-for-8 on free throws the rest of the way to hold off the Big Blue, which could manage just Jones’ floater with 36 seconds left. That wasn’t enough to keep the Vikings from posting their 10th consecutive win in the series. Hamilton’s last win over Princeton was a 59-45 victory on Jan. 6, 2007.

Princeton, which has lost two straight after winning two in a row, went 13-of-18 on free throws, while Hamilton could manage just 4-of-8. The Big Blue also committed 16 turnovers to the Vikings’ 10, helping Princeton enjoy a whopping 17-2 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Vikings jumped out to a 14-6 lead before Riggins scored six straight Hamilton points and nine during a 23-11 run that left the Big Blue leading 29-25 at halftime. That was Hamilton’s largest lead of the game, which featured seven ties and four lead changes.

Kalil Frierson sank a 3-pointer and followed up with a layup during a person 5-0 run that gave Hamilton its first lead, 26-25, with 2:08 left in the first half.

The Big Blue is scheduled to return home to meet Lakota West Tuesday and Colerain Friday in a pair of conference games.
