SCD too much for Badin boys

By Mark Schmetzer

HAMILTON —

Badin’s boys didn’t get much of a chance to celebrate just their second win of the season.

The youthful Rams, who have just two seniors on their roster, edged Reading, 37-36, in a nonleague game Saturday to improve their record to 2-9. Their reward? They met Summit Country Day, last season’s Division III state champion and the No. 1 team in this season’s Associated Press Division III statewide poll, Tuesday at Badin.

The Silver Knights, who play in the Miami Valley Conference, placed five in double figures and never trailed while rolling to a 77-39 win.

Junior guard Antonio Woods scored 16 points and sophomore guard MaCio Teague added 15 to lead SCD (12-0), which has won 21 consecutive games dating to last season.

Junior forward Mike Barwick scored 14, while senior guard Kevin Johnson added 12 and junior guard Joey Kreyenhagen 11 for the Silver Knights, who made eight 3-pointers – three by Kreyenhagen – against Badin’s 2-3 zone defense.

Junior guard Cody Young led Badin (2-10) with a career-high 11 points. Junior forward Nathan Moss added seven, five in the fourth quarter to help the Rams – who started four juniors and a freshman against the experienced Silver Knights – avoid what would have been their worst loss of the season.

Badin shot one free throw while SCD was going 11-of-14 from the line.

The challenging stretch of the schedule continues Friday with a Greater Catholic League Central Division game at Roger Bacon. The Spartans, ranked fifth in the state, were 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the GCL Central going into their game Tuesday at Elder.

Woods and Barwick each scored six points in the first quarter, helping the Silver Knights quickly take control with a 25-10 lead before settling for a 25-14 advantage going into the second quarter. They ended the first half with a 10-0 run to take a 46-24 lead into the locker room.

Summit rode a rash of Badin turnovers in the third quarter – 11, as many as the Rams committed in the first half – to a 61-31 lead going into the fourth quarter.
