Rams set to face undefeated Knights

Badin High School football coach Bill Tenore can’t help but feel a little frustrated at the Rams’ record going into their Greater Catholic League game tonight against powerhouse Kettering Alter.

Badin is 3-2 overall and 1-1 in GCL play, but the Rams are nine points away from being 5-0 overall and 2-0 after losses by one point in a non-league game against Edgewood and eight points to Fenwick.

“Both of those games were winnable games for us,” Tenore said. “It is a little frustrating.”

While those losses were frustrating for the Rams, they face a bigger challenge tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Centerville High School against the undefeated Knights, whose record officially is 4-0-1 after their game against Napoleon on Sept. 7 was cancelled. Alter, which plays in the GCL North Division, already is 2-0 in the GCL after rocking Purcell Marian, 56-6, last Friday.

Badin, a GCL Central team coming off a 29-21 GCL win over Dayton Carroll, hasn’t beaten the Knights in at least eight season, according to the GCL website. Alter won, 23-7, last season. The perennial Division III playoff contenders, who’ve reached postseason play 11 straight years and won the Division IV state championship in 2008 and 2009, have scored at least 42 points in each of their four wins while operating mainly out of a wishbone offense led by senior quarterback Malik Zaire, a Notre Dame recruit.

“Coach (Ed) Domsitz does a great job of utilizing his players,” Tenore said. “He never changes the system. Got that quarterback going to Notre Dame. They probably throw the ball a little bit more than they have, but they can run the ball, too. They’re in the shotgun a lot. They run the spread pretty good. Coach Domsitz knows how to win.”

The Rams can hope to keep the ball out of Alter’s hands with a good night from senior Austin Rieman, who leads the GCL Central with 696 rushing yards and four interceptions, and classmate Drew Evers, who averages 8.0 yards per carry in limited action. They will miss senior fullback Michael Davis, who’s been sidelined for the last two games with an injury.
