FAIRFIELD —
Middletown senior LaTrell Davis just shook his head and laughed.
“We call it the don’t-get-on-ESPN moment — at least not that way,” Davis said of the stigma attached to getting upset early in the Division I district tournament at Fairfield High School.
Seconds later, Davis, who cruised into the 152 semifinal, watched as teammate Jacob Globke, the projected state champ at 160, was upset 7-5 in overtime.
“It’s crazy, man,” Davis said. “It’s no joke down here. People come to wrestle and you got to be ready every match or you’ll have that ESPN moment.”
Lebanon sophomore Alec Logsdon provided a couple of those moments Friday night.
After finishing fourth at sectionals, Logsdon knocked off Centerville champ Nick Broyles of Northmont in the first round, 9-4, before moving into the semis.
“I was feeling really down,” Logsdon said of his sectional result. “Then I saw the draw I had and I Ididn’t think it could’ve come out any better.”
Some of the bigger upsets came in the first round and included Lebanon’s Kyle Ramsey knocking off Fairmont’s Josh Parrett 6-4 at 126. Parrett had beaten Ramsey 16-3 in the GWOC finals three weeks ago. Lakota West’s Andy Cress knocked off Lebanon sectional champ Jordan Collins of Mason 2-1 in the first round at 138 while the second round brought upsets of Butler’s Josh Heidkamp (106), Globke and Centerville’s Garrett Conner (182).
Middletown’s Anthony Jagel found the secret to staying in the upper bracket.
“I was having flashbacks of last year when I missed by two matches,” Jagel said after moving into the semis at 106. “Then, I got my first win and realized last year is last year; this is a brand new year and it is my time to shine.”
Division II: It is turning into a two-team race at Goshen.
Graham and Ross battled through the first day of competition. The Falcons advanced 10 to the semis, Ross four.
Graham leads with 97.5 points while Ross is second with 60.
Graham’s biggest win came at 220 where Anthony Welty used backpoints in the third period to knock off Ross’ Frank Heimkreiter 4-3 in the quarterfinals.
“That was a big win for us,” Graham coach Jeff Jordan said. “Ross is a tough team and we have got our work cut out for us (Saturday).”
Northwestern’s Conner Rogers, who got into the tournament when Nate Henkle of Graham was a scratch at 138, stands one match from a berth at state after knocking off sectional champ Davey Tunon of Clinton-Massie 6-3 in the quarter-finals.
At Bowling Green, Franklin moved Forrest Brewer (113), Matt Middleton (126), Jacob Wright (152), Alex Nori (182) and Chase Henderson (285) into the second round after the start was delayed for two hours.
“This place is brutal,” Franklin coach Jon Berry said of the competition.
Division III: Due to travel and the inclement weather Friday morning, Fairmont bumped the start of the Division III district to a noon start today. Wrestling will conclude on Sunday.
