Commentary: Too soon to be giddy about football recruits

Sure, Wednesday was a big day for college football.

Fans put their caps and jerseys on, fired up the tailgate parties in the driveway and gobbled popcorn as they checked recruiting services online or watched television to see who signed the biggest lineman to protect the most athletic quarterback.

It was national signing day for football, a great day for coaches because there are no consequences for signing a kid who ultimately can’t play.

Winning in February is nice, but wins in the actual season mean much more. Let’s go back to 2007, the class that just graduated.

Rivals.com listed the top five recruiting classes as Florida, Southern Cal, Tennessee, LSU and Texas. ESPN had USC followed by Florida, Texas, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Rivals.com had two national champions out of that group — Florida in 2008 and LSU in 2007 (when most of the kids recruited that year were redshirted).

ESPN had the one Florida national championship.

Auburn, which won the title in 2010, had its recruiting class ranked seventh by both services. Alabama, which won titles in 2009 and 2011, was ranked No. 10 by Rivals and No. 17 by ESPN.

Ohio State was ranked 15th by Rivals and 20th by ESPN, yet reeled off records of 11-2, 10-3, 11-2 and 12-1 (not counting vacated wins) before last fall’s 6-7 meltdown. Not bad for not being considered one of the best recruiting schools of the half decade.

So enjoy the players your team recruited this week. In the fall, we’ll see how many football players they really signed.
