Braves set for district finals

The Talawanda High School girls basketball team will play for a Division II district title for the second straight year Friday night when it faces Dayton Carroll at Mason High School.

The Braves, 24-0 and ranked No. 2 in the final Associated Press state poll, won a sectional title last week with a 63-32 win over New Richmond to set up tonight’s matchup.

T-shirts celebrating the sectional title have been on sale in the athletic department office this week and a pep rally is planned at 1:50 p.m. Friday at the school as a sendoff for the team.

Last year a district title eluded the Braves, who dropped a 15-point decision to Chaminade-Julienne in the title game.

Junior Megan Richardson led all scorers last week against New Richmond with 19 points while fellow junior Ana Richter had 13. Senior Bristyl Webb added 12 points and sophomore Darby Glaab came up big with 10 points.

Talawanda coach Kim Richter said the team rose to the occasion when the junior scoring duo was hampered in the first half.

“Ana was in foul trouble and Megan was hurt. We had 15 fouls in the first half and rotated girls in,” the coach said. “Darby stepped up. Darby made jump shots and her teammates got her the ball.”

Glaab took the opportunity in stride.

“You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do,” she said. “Every one of us (has worked) so we can play on both sides of the court. The ability to change has helped us a lot.”

Richter, a 6-foot-1 junior who has verballed to Miami University, is the Braves’ leading scorer (18.2 points per game) and rebounder (9.5 per game). Richardson averages 12.6 points per contest.

Carroll (20-5) has won 15 of its last 16 games. The Patriots are tournament tested. They reached the regional finals last year and the state championship game in 2011. They are led by 6-1 senior forward Susan Wollenhaupt (11.2 points per game). Wollenhaupt is one of four Carroll players averaging at least eight points per contest.

The winner advances to the regional semifinals on Tuesday at 8 p.m. to face the winner of tonight’s Clinton-Massie-Norwood game.
