High School Football

Big Blue trying to avoid winless home schedule

By Mark Schmetzer

The last time Hamilton High School’s football team went winless on its home field was the 0-10 2004 season.

The Big Blue will try to avoid duplicating that home finish tonight when it meets Oak Hills in a Greater Miami Conference matchup that doubles as Hamilton’s final home game of the season. Activities prior to the 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Virgil Schwarm Stadium will include traditional Senior Night activities, coach Bob Jacoby said.

“They always look forward to it, them and their families being introduced and walking across the field,” Jacoby said, adding that he wouldn’t be giving cameo starting jobs to seniors who wouldn’t otherwise be starters. “We’ll take a normal approach to the game.”

Jacoby couldn’t say whether senior running back-linebacker Marcus Oliver would be back to play against Oak Hills (4-3, 2-2) after missing the last two games with a knee injury.

“We don’t know,” Jacoby said. “That’s a game-time situation.”

The Big Blue (2-5, 0-4) brings a four-game losing streak into the game and will be trying to avoid its longest losing steak since dropping six straight on the way to finishing 3-7 overall and 1-6 in the GMC in 2006. Jacoby was asked how he handles down times such as what HHS currently is experiencing.

“I’m fine so long as guys are giving good effort in practice and games,” the third-year coach said. “I haven’t been happy with our ability to compete in all the games. Sometimes, the kids makes mistakes and — I don’t know what the correct term is — but it seems like some of them have given up under adverse circumstances.

“I’d like to see all our guys play through adversity. I mean, the guys are doing well and staying out of trouble in school. That part of it is OK, but I’d like to seem them compete through adversity and keep their foot on the gas through the whole game. I think, if we’d been able to do that, we might’ve done a little better this year.”

After the home finale, HHS is scheduled to play GMC games at Middletown on Oct. 19 and Fairfield on Oct. 26 to wrap up the season.
