One Browns fan is fond of leaving loud messages on my voicemail every time I dare suggest the team might need a better quarterback than Colt McCoy if ever to be taken seriously.
Fortunately, it’s good, constructive criticism.
“You’re an idiot!” he blustered in a recent rant. “It’s obvious you’re not a Browns fan. That’s your job, so you pretend to be one. Why don’t you stick behind the team. ... Why don’t you just quit. You’re pathetic.”
But wait. We may have found common ground.
While still clinging to my McCoy skepticism, I disagree with NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock, who on Thursday advocated drafting Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill No. 4 overall next month.
The Browns are said to covet Tannehill, which, coupled with their supposed breathless pursuit of Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III (which actually made sense), tells you exactly what they think of McCoy.
Unlike some fans, the Browns clearly don’t think it’s as simple as surrounding McCoy with better talent and watching him turn into Drew Brees overnight.
Tannehill supposedly has small hands, and up until recently he was a receiver. That doesn’t say franchise quarterback, it says reach, especially at No. 4 when Alabama running back Trent Richardson or LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne could be there.
What all fans can get behind is that this is a critical draft and will largely determine how history judges the Mike Holmgren era. They can’t afford a high-profile mistake, especially with a quarterback.
Can’t wait to check my voicemail today.
