Bengals to face a struggling Chiefs team

By Jay Morrison

CINCINNATI —

The Kansas City Chiefs may rank near the bottom of the league in a number of categories, but they showed Monday night they still have plenty of fight.

Playing on the road, the Chiefs took the Pittsburgh Steelers to overtime before succumbing 16-13 to fall to 1-8, equaling the worst record in the NFL.

The first-quarter touchdown Kansas City scored against the Steelers marked the first time all season the team has held a lead in regulation. The Chiefs’ lone win came in overtime.

But as bad as the Chiefs have been, the Cincinnati Bengals (4-5) are in no position to look past them, not after losing four of their last five and turning every remaining game into must wins if they want to return to the playoffs for a second consecutive year.

Here is a first look at the Chiefs team the Bengals will face Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

OFFENSE

Kansas City is about as far from balanced as a team can be offensively, with its rush offense ranking fourth in the NFL while the pass offense languishes at 26th.

Led by running back Jamaal Charles, the Chiefs are averaging 149 rushing yards per game. Charles ranks ninth in the league with 734 yards.

But the passing attack has been abysmal. Quarterback Matt Cassel completed just 11 passes Monday against Pittsburgh, and his passer rating of 66.6 ranks 32nd among 33 NFL quarterback with at least 170 pass attempts.

Dwayne Bowe is the team’s leading receiver with 49 receptions for 626 yards and three touchdowns.

The Chiefs haven’t scored more than 16 points in a game since September, and their yearly average of 16.2 ranks 30th in the league. A big reason for that is the fact they have an NFL-worst 30 giveaways, nine more than the next closest team, and a minus-20 turnover differential, which also is worst in the league.

DEFENSE

Even with a solid outing Monday night, the Chiefs are allowing 28.4 points per game, which is tied for 28th in the NFL.

The pass defense has been solid, allowing only 214 yards per game, which ranks eighth in the league. But that number could be deceiving because the team is usually so far behind in the second half that opponents don’t have much need to throw the ball.

The Chiefs are led by a pair of Pro Bowl linebackers in Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali. Fellow linebacker Justin Houston, a second-year player who delivered the hit that injured Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, leads Kansas City with seven sacks.

The Chiefs rank 23rd against the run, allowing 122.6 yards per game.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Kicker Ryan Succop has made 18 of 21 field goal attempts, with a long of 52. The 18 field goals are tied for seventh in the league.

Punter Dustin Colquitt, the brother of Denver punter Britton Colquitt, ranks 21st in the league with a 45.3 average, while his net average of 40.1 ranks 16th.

The Chiefs rank 11th in punt returns (10.1) and 22nd in kick returns (21.9).

SERIES

The Bengals and Chiefs have played 26 times, with each team winning 13. The Chiefs are 8-6 in games played in Kansas City.

The last time the two teams met was in Week 16 of the 2009 season when the Bengals prevailed 17-10 at Paul Brown Stadium, a game that clinched the AFC North Division title.
