Fenwick defense shuts down Badin

By John Cummings

FRANKLIN —

It has been a tough stretch for the Badin boys basketball team.

The Rams entered Fenwick’s home court Tuesday night at 2-12 on the season, losers of their last three by an average of 25 points per game and on a 1-7 slide.

The Falcons didn’t do much to make things better.

Fenwick improved to 12-3 on the season, holding the Rams without a field goal for 16:16 and to 8-of-31 shooting from the floor in a 47-31 Greater Catholic League win.

“(The scoreless stretches) haven’t been that long before, but we have had a problem with letting teams have 8-0, 10-0 runs at the end of a half and it has been the difference,” Badin coach Nick Argentati said after his team fell to 2-13 overall and 1-8 in the GCL. “We struggle to score and we are a little limited when we don’t score from the perimeter. But, I thought we did a nice job on them defensively.”

After the two teams battled to a 9-9 first quarter, the Falcons’ defense took over.

Fenwick held the Rams to an 0-of-8 second quarter from the floor and five turnovers in running to a 22-12 lead at the break. Frank Catrine was the catalyst, recording four steals and three assists, including a no-look pass across the lane to Leo Haenni for an easy layup and a 18-12 lead with 2:43 left in the half. Catrine followed with a basket of his own before recording a steal and an assist on Taylor Umberger’s basket with 1:40 left for the halftime cushion.

Fenwick had its own issues in the second half.

The Falcons turned the ball over nine times in the second half, including five times in the third quarter when Badin outscored them 7-5, and took just 13 shots from the floor for the final 16 minutes.

“We show signs of being a pretty good team,” Fenwick coach Pat Kreke said after his team improved to 12-3 and 4-3. “But, individually and as a team, we cannot put a good solid effort together. I’m complaining and we are 12-3, we are doing enough to win, but at this point in the year, you want to be climbing that ladder to peak at tournament time.”

Nathan Moss led the way for the Rams with 11 points while Kevin Christie led Fenwick with 15 with Catrine adding 10 points to go with seven rebounds, seven assists, nine steals and a blocked shot.
