OXFORD — Two teams learning to get better for conference play took runs at each other Tuesday night in Millett Hall before the Miami University women’s basketball team got the best of Wright State 70-63.

Miami was led by junior Courtney Osborn’s 27 points, one of three RedHawks in double figures. Kirsten Olowinski and Maggie Boyer added 10 points apiece.

“Courtney Osborn played great offensively and defensively in the first half,” Miami coach Maria Fantanarosa said. “She put the team on her shoulders and carried us. In the second half we got more contributions from everyone. We got balanced scoring inside and out. We are not playing strong for 40 minutes.”

Miami (6-3) jumped to a 13-point lead midway through the first half, but the Raiders clawed back to take a 32-29 lead at halftime.

Wright State, however, didn’t score for more than five minutes to start the second as Miami scored 11 straight points to grab a 40-32 lead. WSU’s first point of the second half came on a free throw by senior Molly Fox, the 1000th point of her career.

That got the Raiders (5-4) started and they cut the lead to 40-38. Miami built its lead to 12 points (60-48) with 5:41 left. Wright State closed to within five points with 11 seconds to go, but Miami held on to win.

“When we went into halftime down three, it was disappointing,” said Osborn, who also pulled down seven rebounds and had seven steals. “Our focus was on early in the second half.”

Wright State coach Mike Bradbury was not pleased with his team’s performance — their third loss in four games in December.

Wright State was led by Sarah Hunter, who scored 13 points, one of four players in double figures. Fox finished with 11 and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds.

“We lack toughness and until we get tougher and really play through adversity, we will not be very good,” Bradbury said. “Right now, we are not a very good team.”

Miami hosts Cincinnati at 2 p.m. Saturday. Wright State hosts Longwood at 2 p.m. Sunday.
