By Rick Cassano

Staff Writer

The Scott brothers helped the University of Mount Union football team get off to a stellar start this season.

Senior defensive back Isaiah Scott had seven total tackles and an interception in the Purple Raiders’ 45-7 victory over Franklin (Ind.) on Sept. 1. He had a 31-yard return on the pick.

Sophomore defensive back Joshua Scott – like his brother, a Fairfield High School graduate – added three tackles in the win.

Mount Union, which was idle last weekend, begins Ohio Athletic Conference play at home against Muskingum on Saturday night.

• Junior defensive back Casey Vatter (Ross) and senior defensive end Grant Poston (Lakota West) are making strong contributions at Centre. Vatter has eight total tackles for the 2-0 Colonels, while Poston has seven total tackles and two tackles for loss.

Centre travels to Lexington, Va., to face Washington & Lee on Saturday night.

Women’s soccer

Freshman midfielder Taylor Ahrens (Ross) has a goal and an assist through five games at Rio Grande (2-3). Freshman forward Courtney Young (Ross) also has a goal, while Katie Fuller (Hamilton) is a senior defender.

The RedStorm travel to Kentucky Christian on Wednesday afternoon.

• Junior midfielder Sammy Koerner (Badin) has started every game and has an assist for Wilmington (4-0-1), which has outscored its opponents 14-0.

Sophomore defender Sara Bishop (Fairfield) has played in one game for the Quakers, who will visit Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday night.

Men’s soccer

Junior forward John Wittich (Lakota West) converted a penalty kick in the 68th minute last Saturday, lifing Hanover to a 1-0 victory over visiting Marian.

Wittich has two goals for the Panthers (1-2-1), who will be on the road to play DePauw on Wednesday night.

Volleyball

Sophomore outside hitter Liz McMahon (Lakota West) is second in kills (71) and third in blocks (24) for Illinois, which stands 3-4.

The Fighting Illini will travel to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Invitational this weekend.
