College insider: Hamilton’s Veal excels for Thomas More

Senior defensive back Kenny Veal is having a strong season for the Thomas More College football team.

The Hamilton High School graduate has 38 total tackles, three tackles for loss, two interceptions and one fumble recovery for the Saints, who are 6-3 overall and 6-2 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Veal has also returned seven kickoffs for a 17.9-yard average and three punts for an 18.7 average.

Also for Thomas More, which is riding a five-game winning streak, junior defensive lineman Sean Lang (Ross) has 10 total tackles and 2.5 sacks, while freshman linebacker Cody Lotton (Ross) has one assist in four games.

The Saints will close the season at home against Mount St. Joseph on Saturday at 1 p.m.

• Junior linebacker Dan Baker (Lakota East) has eight total tackles and an interception in three games for Wittenberg, which is 8-1 overall 5-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

The Tigers visit Oberlin for their regular-season finale on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Men’s soccer

Junior forward John Wittich (Lakota West) was Hanover’s leading scorer this season with eight goals and one assist. He started every game as the Panthers finished 7-7-4 overall and 3-4-2 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Sophomore goalie Ryan Marks (Talawanda) played in five games and made one start. He collected six saves and allowed one goal in nearly 200 minutes of action.

• Senior outside back/midfielder Jake Niederhelman (Ross) played in 15 games and started three this fall for Georgetown (Ky.), which finished 3-15 overall and 2-7 in the Mid-South Conference.

Women’s soccer

Freshman defender/midfielder Ashley Mahoney (Badin) played every game off the bench this season for Kent State, which finished 13-5-2 overall and 7-3-1 in the Mid-American Conference.

Women’s golf

Sophomore Taylor Wogenstahl (Lakota West) had the second-best 18-hole average (82.69) for Northern Kentucky this fall.
