CJ grad Stephen leading Badgers

By BJ Bethel

Staff Writer

Tiera Stephen, the Chaminade Julienne graduate and senior on the Wisconsin women’s basketball team, wrapped up her career Friday.

Stephen’s Badgers fell 74-62 to Purdue in the second round of the Big Ten tournament after she had 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. This a day after Stephen led the Badgers to a 58-57 upset over Illinois in the first round on Thursday.

It’s been a banner season for Stephen, who transferred from Louisville after her freshman season and took over as starting point guard this year. She hit a buzzer-beater on Jan. 31 to help Wisconsin upset No. 7 Penn State 63-61. It was the only loss in conference play for Penn State this season.

She is top-15 in the Big Ten in steals, rebounds and assists. She’s averaging eight points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. She has averaged 34.5 minutes per game and had to grow into a new leadership role as Wisconsin’s only senior.

“It’s definitely challenging,” Stephen told Wisconsin’s Varsity magazine this month.

“I always thought I was a leader. But to be honest, I never knew what a leader was until this last year.”

At CJ, Stephen won a Division II state title in basketball and a state championship in track in the 200 meters. She won a national title playing AAU basketball. As a freshman, she helped Louisville to the national championship game against UConn in 2009.

She will work for PepsiCo following graduation.

Record time: Ohio State hurdler Demoye Bogle (Wayne) broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., in February.

He won the event with a time of 7.71. Bogle broke his own record, which he set last year.

Antonio Blanks (Dunbar) was part of the Ohio State team that won the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:10.91. Second in the event was Arizona State, which featured Trotwood graduates Chris Burrows and William Henry.

Good for fourth: Kaitlyn Good (Vandalia) finished fourth in the women’s pentathlon at the Big East Indoor track meet in February. Good, a junior at Cincinnati, finished with a score of 3,760.

Koerner getting her shots: Sammy Koerner (Hamilton Badin) had three shots for Wilmington’s women’s lacrosse team in a 16-2 loss to Transylvania on March 2.

Ammon spot on: Jordan Ammon (Fairfield) pitched six innings and struck out five while allowing one run for the Cedarville baseball team in a 16-10 win over Clearwater Christian (Fla.) on March 2.
