AKRON —
Zac Dysert had every reason to be worn out after nearly four hours of frenetic, nerve-jangling football. But he really wasn’t.
The Miami University senior quarterback set school records with six touchdown passes and 624 yards of total offense Saturday at InfoCision Stadium, and the RedHawks needed every ounce of energy they had to beat Akron 56-49 in a Mid-American Conference East Division pointfest.
“Right now, I’m just very excited, very exhilarated,” Dysert said. “It was an awesome experience. I’ve just got to thank my teammates and thank God.”
Dysert converted 34-of-49 passes for 516 yards, a career-best effort, and he added a career-high 108 yards on 14 carries. His total-offense performance is also a MAC record.
MU rang up a school-record 705 total yards and watched the Zips pile up 629 in a contest that wasn’t decided until the final play, a Brison Burris interception of a Dalton Williams pass just outside the Miami end zone.
“You’re certainly excited for your kids just staying the course and believing, ‘Hey, we’re going to find a way to win,’ ” said RedHawks coach Don Treadwell, whose squad improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the MAC East. “And at the end of the day, that’s what happened.
“I told the team it’s every bit of that Vince Lombardi creed. There’s nothing better than lying on the field exhausted (and) victorious.”
Dawan Scott (11 catches, 208 yards, two touchdowns), Andy Cruse (nine catches, 111 yards, 1 TD) and David Frazier (four catches, 73 yards, 1 TD) were Dysert’s leading targets. Jamire Westbrook and Luke Swift also hauled in a scoring toss apiece.
“It was a crazy atmosphere,” Scott said. “Our team was energetic. The fans were into it. It was just real good to be in a game like that and come out on top.”
Dysert fell just short of Ben Roethlisberger’s single-game school record for passing yards (525).
“We just kind of took it one play at a time, one drive at a time, and we executed perfect,” Dysert said. “Our O-line played great. Our receivers played awesome. I have to give all the credit to them because they’re the ones that made all the plays.”
The Zips (1-4, 0-1) are showing plenty of grit under first-year coach Terry Bowden. Akron rallied from a 13-0 deficit and took a 49-48 lead on Williams’ 18-yard TD connection with Dee Frieson with 7:06 left.
Miami responded with an 89-yard drive to the end zone, with Justin Semmes scoring on a 3-yard run with 1:04 remaining. That drive was aided by two personal-foul penalties on the Zips.
Williams completed 32-of-42 throws for 446 yards and four scores for Akron. Jawon Chisholm ran 21 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns, and Hamilton native Conor Hundley added a scoring run.
