Aptly-named Swift starts to emerge

By Rick Cassano

OXFORD —

Luke Swift made some personal football history last Saturday during Miami University’s record-setting effort at Akron.

Swift, a senior wide receiver from Greenwood, Ind., scored his first collegiate touchdown in the first quarter, a 35-yard toss from Zac Dysert.

“I’ve had injury problems the past few years, so it felt good to get that first one,” Swift said. “It was really exciting. The line gave protection, and Dysert delivered a great ball.”

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Swift had made one catch for 8 yards this season before heading to Akron, where he totaled three receptions for 52 yards in a 56-49 victory.

“We had a good week of practice as a group,” Swift said. “I was mentally and physically sharp, so they gave me a chance. When they put me in, I made some plays. I feel like everyone’s expected to.”

Mark Spencer, the RedHawks’ wide receivers coach, said Swift is one of many talented receivers on the roster.

“They’re all growing. They’re all getting better,” Spencer said. “Honestly, it’s probably going to be one of those deals where whoever has the hot hand is the guy that’s playing.”

Swift grabbed 14 balls for 153 yards as a freshman, yet hasn’t done much statistically since. He caught two passes for 13 yards as a sophomore, but didn’t play the last six games after suffering a high ankle sprain.

Last year, he appeared in just two games because of a hamstring injury. Swift didn’t have a reception.

And this season, that left hamstring proved to be troublesome yet again. It bothered him in the preseason, but he said he’s been fully healthy since Game 2 against Southern Illinois.

“They were still being cautious with me because of last year,” Swift said. “I think that helped a lot with my recovery this year. They were kind of holding me back and easing me in. Now I just need to make sure that I stay healthy.”

Spencer said Swift brings tremendous speed to the position.

“He’s one of those guys that’s just naturally gifted,” the Miami coach said. “In a short amount of space, he can burst and separate. He’s a guy that stretches the field for you, and he’s a guy when you throw the ball in his direction, he catches it.”

Asked if Swift would become even more of a factor as the season progresses, Spencer smiled.

“That’s the million-dollar question,” he said. “I wish I had that answer. There’s a bunch of them that could be in the mix. We just threw Luke in there for a play, and he got open and caught a 35-yard touchdown pass. From there, it was his day. So it just depends.”

The RedHawks will look to improve their 3-2 record tonight when they travel to Cincinnati (3-0). It will be homecoming at UC.
